Acute Pancreatitis: Review and Clinical Update

چکیده
Hospital Physician January 2009 A cute pancreatitis describes an acute inflammatory process of the pancreas that can range from mild interstitial pancreatitis to severe pancreatitis with pancreatic necrosis and concomitant multiorgan failure. Acute pancreatitis is typically rapid in onset and most commonly encountered in its mild form. In 2005, more than 230,000 patients were treated for acute pancreatitis in hospitals in the United States.1 Recent studies have demonstrated an increase in the incidence of acute pancreatitis, and some have projected substantially higher incidence rates than previously reported, although case-fatalities have remained stable since 1970.2 The increased frequency of acute pancreatitis may be due to the rising incidence of obesity, a risk factor for the development of gallstones and, by extension, gallstone pancreatitis.3 Acute pancreatitis confers a heavy financial burden on the health care system and significant physiologic stress on the patient. A recent study estimated that the average cost per hospitalization for acute pancreatitis is $9870.4 Acute pancreatitis is responsible for $2.2 billion in US health care expenditures annually. The average length of hospital stay for a patient with acute pancreatitis is approximately 5 to 6 days.2,5,6 In addition, acute pancreatitis may be accompanied by life-threatening complications as well as significant morbidity and mortality. This article reviews the diagnosis and management of patients with acute pancreatitis.

Artificial neural networks: applications in predicting pancreatitis survival
Artificial neural networks are intelligent systems that have successfully been used for prediction in different medical fields. In this study, the efficiency of a neural network for predicting the survival of patients with acute pancreatitis is compared with days-of-survival obtained from patients. A three- layer back-propagation neural network was developed for this purpose. Clinical data (e.g...
متن کاملProtective effect of Tribulus terrestris fruit extract on cerulein-induced acute pancreatitis in mice
Objective: Antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antimicrobial activities of Tribulus terrestris (T. terrestris) could be helpful in the treatment of acute pancreatitis; thus, this study was designed to investigate the effects of T. terrestris on cerulein-induced acute pancreatitis in mice. Materials and Methods: Three doses (100, 200 and 400 mg/kg) of T. terrestris hydro-alcoholic extr...

متن کاملIs antibiotic prophylaxis beneficial in acute pancreatitis?--First update.
This Living FRISBEE (Living FRIendly Summary of the Body of Evidence using Epistemonikos) is an update of the summary published in August 2014, based on two systematic reviews appeared in January and February 2015. There is controversy about the effects of prophylactic antibiotics in acute pancreatitis. Searching in Epistemonikos database, which is maintained by screening 30 databases, we ident...
متن کاملNon-traumatic Causes of Brown-Sequard Syndrome: A Case Series and Clinical Update with Systematic Review.
Background: Brown-Sequard syndrome (BSS) is a rare neurological condition resulting from a hemisection injury to or unilateral compression on the spinal cord. The most common causes of BSS that are amenable to be treated surgically can be divided into traumatic and non-traumatic injuries. Traumatic injuries are often reported as the main cause of BSS. However, non-traumatic injuries of the spin...
